Our School

Message from the Principal

The upcoming school year brings all of the excitement of new beginnings, new experiences and new opportunities to Lead, Learn and Grow, which is exactly why we chose that as our theme for the 23-24 school year.

The enthusiasm and wonder of children reminds us that each child comes to school with tremendous hopefulness and anticipation for their very best year. Every teacher, administrator, staff member, and parent plays an important role in making this year a great one for each of our students.  Strong family engagement is a critical part of student success at Abita Springs Elementary School. Parents are a child’s first teacher and important role models. A strong partnership between school and home is essential to learning, so please do not hesitate to reach out to me or your child’s teacher at any time with questions, concerns, and suggestions. It is also important to stay informed about what your child is learning. Your child’s teacher will keep you updated through weekly newsletters and other forms of communication, but you can reach out to share if you notice your child struggling with the content or to discuss strategies for practicing at home. Another important way in which you can support your child is through encouraging consistent and timely attendance. Students should be at school on time every day and avoid missing school as much as possible. Other opportunities to connect with the school include volunteering, joining our PTO, and participating in school events throughout the year.

This year, we will introduce, implement, and embrace our school-wide focus on The Leader in Me, Franklin Covey’s whole school transformation process. It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. The Leader in Me produces incredible results such as higher academic achievement, fewer discipline problems, and increased engagement among teachers and parents. Better yet, The Leader in Me equips students with the self-confidence and skills they need to achieve in the 21st century economy.  The entire staff is working to develop a deep understanding of the 7 Habits, incorporating the language, skills and strategies to our school and personal lives.  We strive to search for and develop the leaders in ourselves, creating a school culture that promotes the development of the unique leadership abilities of each of our students. We will continue teaching biweekly lessons through our counselor and MHP focused on these principles. We will involve our entire staff with supporting these lessons this year to ensure that all of our staff is familiar with the vocabulary and strategies we are using to support our students.  We invite you on this journey with us by using the same language and principles at home.

I am excited to see the academic, social, and intrapersonal progress our students make during the 23-24 school year. Thank you for your very important part in Abita Springs Elementary’s learning community. I’m looking forward to another wonderful school year!
