Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with great excitement that I welcome you to the 2022 – 2023 school year!  This is my first year as principal of Abita Springs Elementary, and my primary goal is for each student and staff member to feel safe, valued, and connected.  To accomplish this goal, the faculty and staff will work diligently each day to create a solid foundation for our students.  We want to provide opportunities that provide students with an effective and engaging educational experience that allows our students to be leaders, teammates, divergent thinkers, and responsible citizens.

Although I am new to the Abita Springs Elementary family, I have been a longtime administrator, teacher, and student in St. Tammany Parish.  I attended St. Tammany Parish public schools K-12, graduating from Covington High School.  I attended Southeastern Louisiana University where I received my Bachelor’s, Master’s, and +30 in education and educational leadership. I taught for 17 years. I was a parishwide assistant principal for one year, and have most recently been the assistant principal at Mandeville Elementary School for the past 7 years. I am extremely excited to be a part of the ASE family and look forward to building on to an already amazing school community.

Our 2022-2023 school theme is “Learning Under the Sea!”  We are looking forward to having visitors on campus and many school events to connect parents, guardians, and the community to the school.  Please check our school website and read teachers’ newsletters weekly for school updates.

If you have a question or concern, please reach out to your child’s teacher, myself, or our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Elizabeth Clark.  We work as a team to create the foundation for your child’s academic and social success

We would love for you to be part of our PTO!  Information will be coming home to let you know more about this organization and its goals and purpose. Let your child’s teacher know if you are interested, or visit our school website to get more information.

The first bell rings at 8:05 to begin drop-off.  School starts at 8:35, and the tardy bell rings at 8:40.  Please arrive on time to avoid your child being tardy and losing instructional time.  If you arrive at school after 8:35, you will need to walk your child to the office to sign them into school for the day.

When you visit our school campus to volunteer, attend an event, eat lunch with your child, or for any reason, please make sure you have your ID and check in at the front office to receive a badge. Please keep contact information current through the front office and your child’s teacher.  It is important that we are able to get in touch with you at all times.

My door is open and I welcome your input. Please feel free to contact me via email at the address below or call to make an appointment to speak with me via phone call to discuss your concerns or ideas.

Yours in education,
Kay Burns, Principal
